BUZZIN' 20: Freak Owls
What you do get if you put together Brandon Flowers, Iggy Pop and the bird from JJ72? Well if you look from a distance it would look like Freak Owls have put the 3 figures together in Madam Tussards
Freak Owls were finalists in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition for their song "Little Things", which is a surprise - as the competition was one of the things we've been spammed about by festival organisers but never actually heard any of the bands that play it. I guess it's one of those contests that must be bigger in America than over here as there's no doubt Josh Ricchio is a songwriter par excellence
The album "Taxidermy" released last March is the sort of album that draws you in with the hook, but then has so much going on in each song you really want to listen to repeatedly. Between the unique percussion and layered vocals this isn't straightforward songwriting and its what elevates it above its influences of Bon Iver and Deathcab For Cutie. Production wise it mixes up organic acoustics and handclaps with programmed beats and looped samples.
